Rubber soles & Comfort

Trippen soles are designed to be flexible and lightweight—perfect for everyday use in urban environments only.
Here's what you should know:

Rubber Soles & Comfort:
Trippen soles are designed to be flexible and lightweight—perfect for everyday use in urban environments only. Here's what you should know:

Wear & Repair:
When soles wear down send them to us in time for resoling to avoid irreparable damage.

Comfort & Support:
Trippen shoes are known for comfort and healthy design—but they’re not substitutes for orthopedic footwear. If you have medical foot conditions, please consult your doctor before use.

Orthopedic Insoles:
The Closed collection (especially lined styles) is best suited for custom insoles. Other models are designed for standard feet and not compatible with orthopedic inserts.

Squeaky Soles:
Sometimes, a few of our Closed shoes may develop a slight squeaking sound caused by friction between the cork insole and the footbed. Luckily, it’s usually easy to fix—just remove the cork insole and sprinkle a little talcum or body powder underneath. If you don’t have any at hand, we’ll be happy to send you a small sachet.

Wood soles: naturally unique

Our wooden soles are made from alder, beech, or poplar—each pair is one of a kind in grain and color.
They’re absorbent, breathable, and comfortable, but do need a little extra care:

Cleaning & Care:
Don’t use varnish. Let wet shoes dry naturally. Light dirt can be removed with fine sandpaper.

Delicacy Warning:
Wood can break if shocked, and is not suited for people with joint, hip, or knee issues—especially the high-fashion styles, which don’t offer shock absorption.

Structural Care:
If the leather upper stretches too much, the shoe may lose support—please send them in for repair. Loose nails (due to movement of the wood) should also be repaired promptly.

Bag care & maintenance

Trippen bags are crafted with the same quality leather as our shoes. To preserve their beauty and shape:

Shape & Structure:
Leather softens over time. To slow this, avoid overloading or frequently using the bag empty.

Surface Sensitivity:
Scratches, heat, moisture, and abrasions can mark the leather. Be gentle and mindful of how and where you store or wear your bag.

Color Transfer:
Just like with our shoes, dark coloured leathers may bleed onto light clothing—especially when new or in damp conditions.

General leather care & handling

Our leather is a natural, breathable material. Slight marks, scratches, and color variations aren’t flaws—they’re part of its unique character and a sign of minimal processing. Here’s how to care for it:

General Care:
Polish plain leathers occasionally using a gentle product like Collonil Waterstop Colours (with lanolin). Avoid over-applying cream as it can clog the pores and reduce breathability.

Nubuck (suede-like) Leather:
Clean using a suede brush or special nubuck block. Use a neutral waterproofing spray before first wear. Do not use polish. Note: some stains (like grass or oil) can be permanent.

Vegetable-Tanned Leathers (e.g. wax, waw, dplx, dpw, ice):
These are sensitive to moisture, heat, and humidity. If wet, let them dry naturally (never on a radiator or in direct sun). Use shoetrees to keep their shape—but avoid them for very soft leathers. Expect color darkening and marks over time.

Glossy or Coated Leathers (e.g. bug, glm, lux, pek, ven, lam, crk, wht, metallic waw/sft):
These are delicate and prone to surface damage. Scratches or scuffs on these finishes cannot be repaired.

Dye Transfer Warning:
Dark and coloured leathers can bleed, especially in humid or wet conditions. Be cautious when wearing them with light-coloured clothing.

Leather Stretching:
Leather adapts to your feet with time. Make sure the shoes fit well when new—especially with patent leather, which can crack if strained.
